People often come in expecting to choose between therapy and medication, as if they were competing options. For many conditions, including depression and anxiety, research and experience point the same way: the two tend to work better together than either one alone.
Medication can ease symptoms that make everything else harder. When sleep improves, panic settles or low mood lifts a little, it becomes possible to think, plan and try new things.
Therapy is where you work out what is driving the pattern and practice different ways of responding to it. It builds skills that stay with you, and it gives you somewhere to say the things you have not said out loud yet.
Put simply, medication can lift the floor, but it does not by itself teach you what to do differently. That is what the talking work is for.
Some people do well with therapy alone. Others need medication to get to a place where therapy is possible. Some prefer to try one first and add the other later. The right balance depends on your symptoms, your history and what you want, and it can change over time.
At Lampstand Behavioral Health, assessment, prescribing and talking work are offered together, so you do not have to coordinate between separate offices. The plan is decided with you, case by case, and reviewed as you go.
You can read more about how this works on our services page.
