Treatment does the heavy lifting, but everyday habits help it along. Simple, realistic steps that support mental health.

When you are struggling, advice like “just exercise more” can feel impossible. These are not cures, and they do not replace treatment. But small, steady habits can support your mood and help treatment work. Pick one or two that feel doable and start there.
Physical activity is one of the best-studied ways to support mood. It does not need to be a workout. A ten-minute walk, stretching or dancing in the kitchen all count. Outdoors and in daylight is a bonus.
Regular times for waking, eating and winding down give your body and mind something steady to lean on, especially when everything else feels unpredictable.
Low mood often pulls people away from others, which can make things worse. A short call, a message or sitting with someone you trust can help, even if you do not talk about how you feel.
Schedule something small you used to enjoy or that gives you a sense of achievement, even if you do not feel like it. With low mood, action often has to come before motivation, not after.
They can feel like relief in the moment but tend to deepen low mood and anxiety, and they can interact with medication.
Progress is rarely a straight line. A hard day does not undo the work you are doing. Notice what helped, even a little, and do more of that.
If low mood, worry or poor sleep last more than a couple of weeks, or make it hard to get through the day, it is time to talk to someone. Learn more about depression treatment and anxiety treatment, or request an appointment.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911.
